Royal court selects teachers of the year

STCU honors educators who inspired young women

[May 7, 2010]

The 2010 Royal Court of the Spokane Lilac Festival has named the Teachers of the Year for their inspiration and contribution to excellence in education. STCU sponsors the award, now in its tenth year.

Representatives of the festival and STCU presented the awards in April and May at the schools of the seven local teachers. The teachers and counselors will ride in the Teacher of the Year float in the 72nd annual Lilac Festival Armed Forced Torchlight Parade on May 15.

Recipients are:

  • Chris Ryman- Northwest Christian High School
  • Victoria Hernvall- Medical Lake High School
  • Vicky Jones- Lewis and Clark High School
  • Leslie Plaster- Gonzaga Preparatory
  • Rachel Lorenzi- Ferris High School
  • Rick Giampietri- Central Valley High School
  • Linda Hutchinson- Shadle Park High School

Members of the 2010 Lilac Festival "Freedom is Not Free" Royal Court nominated teachers who had a significant positive impact on their journey through high school. "This teacher exceeds her responsibility,” Said Queen Hayley of Northwest Christian, “spending hours and hours grading assignments looking not for minimum requirements but looking for how the student is excelling and maturing in their work"

“She has pushed me to MY limit, constantly telling me how much potential I have and making me work harder and take responsibility, she is never afraid to tell me like it is,” said Princess Myryda of Medical Lake.

Each Court member expressed the difficulty in selecting only one teacher among the many educators who have affected their high school journey. The 2010 Teachers of the Year include counselors, coaches and mentors, inspiring the next generation to succeed.
