Children’s Miracle Network helps Spokane kid overcome injuries

2010 CU for Kids Campaign a huge success

STCU members and employees made a big impact on the lives of kids with chronic health problems during this year’s Credit Unions for Kids fundraiser. During our May balloon campaign, a record-setting $9,532.98 was donated.  Thank you for generously supporting Children's Miracle Network!

Zachary Donovan placed seventh the last time his class ran a mile.

“The time before that, I was ninth, and before that I was 13th,” says Zach, who is 10 years old and a fourth-grader at Hutton Elementary School.

It’s an amazing record for a boy who nearly died, and then had to relearn to walk.

Zach, who lives in west Spokane, is this year’s Children’s Miracle Network “champion child” for the state of Washington. He and other champions from every state help raise awareness for CMN, which every May gets a financial boost from CU for Kids Month.

Contributions from you and other STCU members stay in the Inland Northwest, benefitting 10 non-profit hospitals and programs that help kids with chronic health problems.

“Children’s Miracle Network did a lot for me,” says Zach, who was backed over by a dump truck in August 2008.

Zach required several emergency surgeries, followed by more surgeries during eight weeks of hospitalization at Sacred Heart Medical Center. He went through a year of physical therapy at St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute and more months of recovery at home.

During his convalescence at Sacred Heart, Zach told stories, painted pictures, built things… and played with the Wii bought with a gift card from Children’s Miracle Network. Later, games like bowling played on that same Wii “helped him get up and around,” said Dan Donovan, Zach’s father.

Of course, Zach benefited from Children’s Miracle Network in other ways, too. Most notably, the two hospitals where he recovered both receive money from local fundraising, including a portion of the $24,648 STCU raised last year.

Thanks to his great medial care, rehabilitative services and support from Children’s Miracle Network, Zach is looking forward to a great summer of running, riding his bike, and playing soccer and basketball with friends.

“I’m pretty much 100 percent,” he says.
