Alice Cooper was wrong. School isn’t out forever. And summer’s dwindling.
Now, don’t panic: there are still a couple of weeks for kids to sleep in, to finish summer reading lists, or to learn to execute a proper jackknife dive (legs together; toes pointed).
But if you live near a high school, you’ve heard the marching band learning the new fall music. Football practice is starting, too.
Another sign that the yellow buses will soon be rolling: STCU is preparing to help with back-to-school events in about 20 public school districts and colleges.
For instance, we’ll be there when Spokane Public Schools holds orientation for new teachers and at Mead’s back-to-school barbecue. We’ll help with breakfast events in the Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene districts, and with the benefits fair at West Bonner County School District. You’ll see us when staff is welcomed back to North Idaho College and to the University of Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene campus.
STCU isn’t just for educators (membership is available to anyone who lives, works, worships or goes to school in Washington or in Idaho's Bonner or Kootenai counties). But as an organization founded by teachers, we remain committed to education, sponsoring select scholarships and research symposiums, helping with job fairs, and seeing that some of the region’s outstanding teachers get the recognition they deserve. We’re also invested in financial education, with offerings for all ages -- members and nonmembers alike.
Compared with those efforts, providing a little food or small gifts at annual back-to-school events may seem like a small thing, but member/educators tell us it makes a difference. We enjoy it, too!
So keep working on that jackknife. When it’s time to dive into a new school year, STCU will be there to help.
