How to build community

A holiday wish from our CEO

[November 25, 2009]

Recently I came across a poster titled How to build community. Its 43 suggestions are not the sorts of things that draw attention. Instead, they’re acts of everyday thoughtfulness. Get to know your neighbors, Help carry something heavy and Share your skills are among them.

I saw that list and thought of my late friend Jasper Johnson, who was an STCU board member and Whitworth College professor. Every day, Jasper mailed a note telling someone why he appreciated them or how they were making a difference. While he also took other, more significant steps to improve his community, it was that small, consistent act that endeared Jasper to so many.

In these challenging times, charitable organizations need help from those of us who can afford to give. But imagine the impact if everyone – regardless of income – also wrote a letter of appreciation, took a kid fishing or dropped in on a lonely neighbor.

We’d be the richest community on Earth.

This holiday season, I’m grateful to be part of an organization whose members are recognized for their generosity and civic engagement. It can’t be said often enough: Thank you for being a part of the STCU community.

Wishing you the very best,

Steven L. Dahlstrom
President/CEO
