What will you do when you retire?

Likely the same thing you do now unless you plan ahead

When someone says you should plan for retirement, you may think they mean "save your money." But for most people, the key to a happy and fulfilling retirement is to stay busy.

People who expect to develop new interests in their retirement years typically don't unless they plan ahead, according to MoneyCoach, a free online financial education service for STCU members.

Smart people think about how they want to spend time after they retire. Here are five ideas to consider:

  1. Write down what you expect to be actively involved in after you retire.
  2. Investigate whether you'll need more education or skills to execute your plan, then take time to get the training you'll need.
  3. If you enjoy the bustle and creativity of the workplace, consider working part-time to stay involved.
  4. If you've always wished for more time to work on a favorite cause, consider serving as a volunteer when you retire.
  5. And if you want to devote more time to a hobby in retirement, nurture it now. Few people who have not cultivated interests during their middle years do so after age 65.
